Room 303 Classroom Economy Overview
In Room 303, we have a classroom economy implemented as part of the classroom management system. Each week, students can earn money for being at school, completing tasks, good behavior, for coming to class on time, and more. Debits will be given for classroom supplies (pencils, erasers, etc.) and also for hall passes outside of normal passing times, etc. Also, fines will be given to students throughout the week who break classroom rules in our community of learners. Students may occasionally earn additional bonus dollars throughout the week for displaying exceptional learning behavior. Such behaviors may include: helping a neighbor without being asked, working quietly, being a great example, participating in class discussions, answering questions in class, complimented by other school staff, etc. At the end of each week, students will add up their weekly checklist and be paid according to their total weekly payout (including debited end-of-week purchases). Students have the opportunity to spend their hard-earned money on candy, trinkets, coupons, iPad apps, and more. I find that this classroom management tool is not only motivational for students, but also helps my students to become more financially literate and improve math skills (specifically in the money domain).
